The English along with Welsh Pitted Together for RWC 2027 Down Under

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The pool stage draw was conducted by rugby legends such as former All Black Dan Carter.

England together with their Welsh counterparts have been drawn in the same pool for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, promising a highly-anticipated early clash in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Pool F by Tonga and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw recalls their memorable meeting in the pool stages of the 2015 World Cup, where Wales' victory at Twickenham contributed to the hosts' surprise group stage elimination.

Other Notable Pool Pairings

Ireland and the Scots also share a group once again, replicating the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. On that occasion, they secured a 36-14 win, with Scotland unable to advance to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Portugal, both made a strong impression as underdogs in France, complete that Pool D.

Notably, the victors of these two groups cannot meet holders and top-ranked South Africa before the final, assuming the South Africans win their assigned pool.

Knockout Implications

Should the pools conclude in line with the current world rankings, further top favourites like the All Blacks and France would remain separated from both the English and Ireland all the way to the final.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the other top-ranked nation on the same side of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Hosts Draw Blockbuster Opener

Hosts the Wallabies have been drawn alongside their trans-Tasman rivals and three-time winners the All Blacks in Pool A.

Australia will open the World Cup in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee match aimed at launch the event.

Elsewhere, holders South Africa have been paired with the Azzurri, the Lelos and Romania. The French team are grouped with the Brave Blossoms, 2031 hosts the USA and Samoa.

Larger Tournament for 2027

Argentina will face the Flying Fijians, Spain and the Canadian team as the tournament grows to 24 teams from the 20 who competed in France.

This edition will feature a last-16 stage for the first time in Rugby World Cup existence.

While the winner of England and Wales's group may avoid some of the rugby's biggest beasts early on, they will have to face the second-placed team from Group B – most likely Italy – in the last 16.

A total of four of the remaining six pool winners will play a third-placed side from the pool stages.
