Uche Ignites Dominant Crystal Palace Triumph at Shelbourne.
Even though entering their first-ever European adventure, Crystal Palace are learning very quickly. Without star figures like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles left Dublin with a commanding win that all but guarantees them a place in the Europa Conference League qualifying rounds.
Another three points in their upcoming fixture against Finnish KuPS should be sufficient to secure direct passage to the knockout stages, especially after a prior setback against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Seize the Opportunity
This match provided a chance for several Palace's lesser-used players to impress. Christantus Uche, making only his second beginning after arriving on loan from Getafe, opened the account with a well-taken goal. Striker Eddie Nketiah added a second, scoring for the second consecutive succession.
A Shelbourne side that had concluded their domestic season proved no match against a mostly rotated Palace lineup. The visitors were already weakened by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with knee injuries.
Dominance Established from the Start
Despite torrential rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly took control. A slick passing sequence in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, allowed Nketiah to set up Uche for a simple tap-in.
Midfielder Adam Wharton went close soon after, driving a powerful shot over the bar. Nketiah then appealed for a penalty after bursting into the box, but the referee dismissed the protests.
The formerArsenal striker didn't need to wait long to find his goal, prodding home from close range after Uche's shot had struck the post.
The home side were clinging on desperately. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to escape a booking for a couple of robust tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the crossbar with a header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Contest
The match was as good as over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past a series of weak challenges before calmly dispatching a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
Following the break, coach Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to withdraw key players like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse almost scoring with his very first touch, but saw his shot blocked.
The youngster was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one attempt crash off each posts before being clasped on the line. Uche also blazed a sitter of a chance, showing there is still scope for improvement in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a late knock to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This paved the way for 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to earn his first-team debut, rounding off an otherwise perfect evening for the visiting side.
